Here\u2019s a more grounded look at what the evidence actually supports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Reaction time and attention<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is the most consistent finding in the literature. A few studies have found that gamers, especially those who play 3D adventure games, perform better on tests of recognition memory, and that older adults who take up gaming show small improvements in memory tasks. One caveat is that these studies are often small and hard to replicate. The World Health Organization added \u201cgaming disorder\u201d to its classification in 2019, though the diagnosis is meant for severe, sustained cases, not for anyone who plays a lot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The best-supported view is that gaming itself is neither good nor bad for mood. What matters is why you\u2019re playing and what it\u2019s displacing. Playing to connect with friends and unwind after work is associated with good outcomes.
